Jakarta and Bali to Host Women Playwrights
    November 17, 2006

Indonesia will host the 7th Women Playwrights International Conference from Nov. 19 through Nov. 26. The conference will take place in Jakarta (Nov. 19-24) and in Bali (Nov. 25-26) with an agenda that may help stimulate the improvement of theater in this diverse nation. Indonesia was chosen as the host of the 7th conference during the 6th conference in Manila in 2003.

A number of world-class authors will share their views at the forum. They are Nawal El Saadawi of Egypt, Mumbi Kaigwa (Kenya), Noelle Janaczewska and Julie Holledge (Australia), Sanae Iijima (Japan) and Eleanor Wong (Singapore).

Not only will the conference host seminars and discussions; it will also present cultural performances, handicraft exhibitions and workshops.

Conference chairperson Ratna Sarumpaet and her Satu Merah Panggung Theater will perform Pelacur dan Sang Presiden (the Prostitute and the President) at Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM), Central Jakarta, on Nov. 24.

Australian Julie Janson will play Tsunami Tsunami while Beverly Andrews from Britain will perform One September Night, a play set in Britain on the evening of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

It focuses on a young couple -- an Asian Muslim and his wife, a white Briton -- who travel to his parents' home to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary.

During the course of their journey they discuss and argue about the terrible events that have taken place that day.

In addition, Suzy Messerole and Meena Natarajan from the U.S. will perform in Draw To Circles.

Definitely, the event will be a forum that reflects cultural liberty in a diverse world -- coined as the theme of this year's conference.
